HAZOP and Pre-Start up Safety Review

CSA Group has experienced personnel that can work with your teams in preparation and development of on an approach that matches your specific requirements, relating to HAZOP. We can lead, facilitate or take part as independent advisors, to achieve your required outcome.

The key processes are explained below:

HAZID – This study is focussed on the identification of major hazards that involve dangerous substances, i.e. those capable of causing serious injury/fatality to people on site or threatening people, property or the environment offsite. HAZID generally takes place at the front end engineering design or project definition stage and considers preventive controls that need to be built into the detailed design for the project.

HAZOP – This inductive process is carried out by a multidisciplined team that study the detailed design of a process with the aim of identifying hazards and operability problems.

Pre Start-up Safety Reviews (PSSR) – PSSR is a safety review conducted prior to start-up (commissioning) to ensure that installations meet the original design or operating intent, to catch and re-assess any potential hazard due to changes during the detailed engineering and construction phase of a project.

PSSR covers not only equipment, but also procedures and training, for example, follow up on HAZOP reviews, availability and status of operating manuals, start-up/shutdown and emergency procedures. Technical HSE Site review as part of PSSR is carried out when construction is nearing mechanical completion (about 90-95% completion) and the site is reasonably accessible.
